Fluid Mechanics is the study of fluids at rest (fluid statics) and in motion (fluid dynamics).

A substance that continually deforms (flows) under an applied shear stress regardless of the magnitude of the applied stress is a fluid.





Question 1.

1.     Water is flowing through a pipe having diameters 600mm and 400mm at the bottom and upper end respectively. The intensity of pressure at the bottom end is 350KN/m3 and the pressure at the upper end is 100KN/m2. Determine the difference in Datum head if the rate flow through the pipe is 6o litres/sec.



Question 2
1.     A 6m long pipe is inclined at an angle 20o with the horizontal. The smaller section of the pipe which is at lower level is of 100mm diameter and the larger section of the pipe is of 300mm diameter as shown in figure below. If the pipe is uniformly tapering and the velocity of water at the smaller section is 1.8m/s, determine the difference of pressures between the two sections.
          
        

           Question 3

1.     A pipe 200m long slopes down at 1 in 100 and tappers from 600mm diameter at the end to 300mm diameter at the lower end, and carries 100 litres/sec of oil (sp. Gravity 0.8). if the pressure gauge at the higher end reads 60KN/m2, determine:
i.                   Velocity at the two ends;
ii.                 Pressure at the lower end. Neglect all losses.






Question 4

1.     The following data relates to a conical tube of length 3.0m fixed vertically with its smaller end upward and carrying fluid in the upward direction. The velocity of flow at the smaller end is 10m/s. the velocity of flow at the larger end = 4m/s.  The loss of head in the tube is 0.4(V1 – V2)2/2g, where V1 and V2 are the velocities at the smaller and the larger ends respectively.
Pressure Head at the smaller end = 4m of liquid. Determine the pressure head at the larger end.





            Question 5

1.     In a smooth inclined pipe of uniform diameter 250mm, a pressure of 50Kpa was observed at section 1 which was at elevation 10m. At another section 2 a elevation 12m, the pressure was 20kPa and the velocity was 1.25m/s. Determine the direction of flow and the head loss between those sections. The fluid in the pipe is water. The density of water at 20oC and 760mmHg is 998kg/m3.
